maychorian: (stories with SamnDean)

As a newbie to the SPN fandom, I’ve been reading an awful lot. The fact is, the fanfiction in this fandom is sometimes/often better than the show itself. Show is cool, yes, but flawed and error-full and screaming for fanfic fixes. So people do. Really well.

As you do, I’ve found a few writers who are consistently excellent and appear to mostly see the characters the way I do, and write a variety of genres really well, though my preference is still heavy on the h/c and angst side, with also love for some humor and well-written action. These people might be BNFs or whatever, because they do seem to have an awful lot of friends/reviews. Do not care either way. Fact is, these people write really, really good stuff.

So yeah, here’s my list of good SPN writers. There is a high likelihood that it is very similar to a lot of other people’s lists, but that’s okay. If I can introduce you to even one good writer who you didn’t know existed before reading this, then my work is done. I may update this list occasionally. I have read a significant number of these people’s fics, enough to recommend not only a story here or there, but their entire milieu. I’ve read lots of other awesome single stories, but not enough of that particular writer to know their work as a whole.

But I can forgive that, because the h/c is absolutely delicious and besides that one note, the characterization is perfect. Mostly medium-length stories rather than novel-length stuff, but all very satisfying. This writer is almost terrifyingly prolific. I have no idea how she finds the time and the energy. Just the thought of writing that much exhausts me.)

http://kroki-refur.livejournal.com (Just always good, okay? Episode reviews, picspams, angst, humor, AUs—all wonderful. Sometimes the literary devices—like the distinctive voices and repetition of certain phrases—can get a little wearing, but she’s experimenting and that’s not a bad thing.)

http://iamstealthyone.livejournal.com (She has a simple, spare style that serves her stories very well. YOU MUST READ THE BUNNY ‘VERSE DRABBLES. They are hilarious.)

http://janissa11.livejournal.com (Amazing. This is better than profic, I swear. I kind of glutted myself on her writing, though, and the man pain was so exquisite it actually made me nauseated, to the point that I didn’t eat supper that night. Her Dean just makes me hurt. So not what you should read if you’re in the mood for some lighthearted fun. “Under a Haystack” is fantastic, though.)

http://kellifer_fic.livejournal.com (HUGE variety. She also writes awesome SG-1 stuff.)

http://dodger_winslow.livejournal.com (Caveat of extremely long internal monologues, which I sometimes skim or skip altogether. When it’s good, though, it’s REALLY REALLY good. Right now I’m especially enamored with the story of Dean’s first girlfriend. That one just killed me, and I keep thinking about it at odd moments.)

http://minkmix.livejournal.com (I don’t think she uses enough commas, and it drives me a little nuts. But the pure goodness of every single story makes up for that. Humor, fun, action, and a little bit of h/c that’s pretty much always heavier on the h than the c, so therefore not quite ideal in my little world. Uniformly excellent characterization. Mostly little snippets that leave you wanting more, though—that’s my only complaint. Her Dark Angel Alec & Cindy ficlets are also wonderful.)

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/69110/Mirrordance (Deep and nuanced and complex characterization and just really, really good, okay? Also, excellent hurt/comfort, not too much, not too little, always in character. “The Least I Can Do” kind of almost broke my heart for John, and then fixed it, a little.)

ETA:

And how could I forget!

http://redrikki.livejournal.com (Mostly short stories and drabbles, a lot of tasty crossovers, sometimes light, sometimes serious, always good characterization. Her Buffy stuff is fun, too.)
