Podcast!

Last week, I recorded a podcast with my good friends Nick and Tim, and when I came back from a night of playing geeky games, I found that it's been posted!

Derailed Trains of Thought Episode 14

Their podcast, Derailed Trains of Thought, is all about stories, and they asked me to be a guest to talk about fandom. It was a really fun talk, extremely geeky. I talked about all my fandoms, but mostly Supernatural. The guys talked about Muppets and Lost and other stuff. Great fun. Give it a listen and let me know if you think I did it justice. I even read a little crossover commentfic at one point, if you want to check that out.

One thing I do want to clarify... At one point I said, in response to a question, that if you want to be a serious writer you have to be careful with fandom because of how involved in it you can get, to the point of neglecting your original work. I should have said "commercial writer," not "serious writer," because I know there are plenty of serious writers who don't want to write anything but fanfic, and there's nothing wrong with that. (I think I was pretty clear about that, in another part of the discussion.)

I've met so many truly fantastic writers through fandom, so many wonderful people, and I really wouldn't have it any other way. This interview was really off the cuff, just a talk between friends, and there are things I wish I could add and clarify, but I hope that my feelings of appreciation and love for fandom came across, anyway.

(And if any of you want to do some art of Kermit and a pirate captain and send it to them, that would be great. :D)

SO GLOATING

maychorian: (GUH DEAN IS SO PRETTY AGH)
My birthday was fantastic. On Sunday I played D&D with my friends and ate raspberry jello cake. On Monday you guys gave me like a thousand amazing fics and that continued for a bit, and that night Jill and I made new characters for a RPG called Hollow Earth and John gave me a sky lantern and we watched it fly away to the sky and that was awesome and beautiful. And on Tuesday I got a kitten. So yeah. Awesome twenty-seventh anniversary of being born. And I am SO gloating about my amazing friends, because LOOK WHAT YOU GUYS DID FOR ME. ::points below::

Besides fics, [livejournal.com profile] just_ruth and [livejournal.com profile] oatmeal_queen gave me V-gifts and [livejournal.com profile] wynefred and [livejournal.com profile] half_vulcan gave me graphics. (Also [livejournal.com profile] davincis_girl down below, which you definitely should NOT miss.) And [livejournal.com profile] dotfic wrote me a fic called Center of Balance for one my prompts on the Team Free Will schmoop meme, and ohhhhh it's amazing. ♥ ♥ ♥

You guys, you guys, I have the most awesome friends ever and I am gloating my butt off. I highly recommend every single thing on this list. READ THEM. You won't be sorry. I mean, just look at those names! It's like a Who's Who of fantastic writers! My flist is the best and I am totally taking credit for gathering you awesome people around me. You make my life so much better.

Still amnesty on all the remaining prompts. Forever amnesty. I will never be sorry to see one of those turn up somewhere.

SORRY TO TAKE UP LOTS OF ROOM ON YOUR FLIST WITH THIS AWESOMENESS. THAT'S WHAT YOU GET FOR BEING AWESOME FRIENDS. I'M NOT GOING TO CUT IT.

Supernatural:

Raised from the Depths by [livejournal.com profile] authoressnebula Human!Castiel (grace drained, fallen, whatever) experiences almost drowning. Not fun!

Boys Gone Wild by [livejournal.com profile] haruslex Team Free Will goes hiking to find some sort of artifact or something lost in the woods. Sam and Dean hate camping, as we all know, but Castiel seems to like the trees or the rocks or something. It's weird. Castiel is weird. Nice, though.

The Very Mature Adventures of Cas and Ruby (The 4-inch Edition) by [livejournal.com profile] alocine_89 Crack! Castiel gets shrunk. Dean carries him around in his pocket. And he will never, ever admit that he kinda likes having a literal shoulder angel. (Bonus: It happens in S4 and Ruby gets shrunk, too, so Sam has a shoulder demon. And they slap fight.)

I...have no idea what this is. I'm up past my bedtime, okay by [livejournal.com profile] haruslex Castiel has had enough of these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking astral plane.

Boom Boom Fireworks by [livejournal.com profile] gleeker13 Bobby has a backyard cookout for his boys. ♥

Motherfucking Snakes on an Astral Plane Part 2 by [livejournal.com profile] maskedfangirl Castiel has had enough of these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking astral plane.

Do Like a Dog by [livejournal.com profile] trifletrot Weechester or Teenchester: Sam and Dean go swimming.

untitled by [livejournal.com profile] sinnerforhire When Dean gets suddenly sick or injured in the middle of a training exercise, drill-sergeant John remembers to be a dad.

As Companion to Four Fingers by [livejournal.com profile] roque_clasique Dean injures both of his thumbs and suddenly can't do a lot of things like open doors, do up buttons, hold a remote, and so on. At first he hates having to depend on Sam to do so much for him, but he eventually gets used to it.

To Forget the Din of the World by [livejournal.com profile] ratherastory Castiel meets Missouri sometime in S4. She's way too smart to get her eyes burned up, and she's not scared to smack him on the head and tell him he's being an idiot for not following his conscience.

Important Decisions by [livejournal.com profile] caffienekitty Jo and Ellen run into the boys on a hunt. Afterward, they unwind with movies and pizza in the motel.

The Stranger by [livejournal.com profile] the_spice One reason John was so willing to fall on his sword in 2.1 was because he'd met Castiel and he knew someone would be looking after his boys.

Hamster House by [livejournal.com profile] de_nugis Something with hamsters.

Sweet Tooth of the Lord by [livejournal.com profile] elsewhere_kels Jelly beans! Also Twizzlers.

bubblegumisebilrawr by [livejournal.com profile] mello_mcqueen John hates bubblegum. He hates it. From now on, that stuff is banned.

Taste the Rainbow by [livejournal.com profile] lassiterfics 2010-06-28 07:41 pm (local) (link) Select
God mojoed Cas up just a leeetle too much when He rezzed him, and now Castiel makes flowers and candy appear everywhere he walks. It's more annoying than nice.

Leverage:

Untitled by [livejournal.com profile] authoressnebula Five times Eliot protected Hardison.

Not-Quite-Chicken Soup For The Soul by [livejournal.com profile] alocine_89 By now they should all be used to the weird things Parker says and does, but somehow they aren't. And she is NOT a good cook and Hardison will NOT lie to spare her feelings.

5 x Hugs by [livejournal.com profile] mymuseandi Five times someone on the team got a hug.

Square Peg by [livejournal.com profile] faithburke Okay, so they're not a normal family. Nate knows that. But sometimes he feels uncomfortably like a dad.

Iron Man:

Untitled by [livejournal.com profile] limegreenjillo Shockingly, Tony notices for once that Pepper is having a hard day. He makes her a sandwich as only he can.

Prison Break:

A Gift From Above by [livejournal.com profile] tahirire Michael has a bit of a breakdown and his cellie helps him.

Stargate: SG-1:

This Hallmark SG-1 moment is brought to you by Ancient Tech by [livejournal.com profile] zoemathemata SG-1: Daniel and Sam get hit with some sort of alien technology that makes them overly emotional. Cue extreme discomfort from Teal'c and Jack and the Wonder Twins crying on each other's shoulders.

Star Wars:

untitled by [livejournal.com profile] whistler_wren Young Master Obi-Wan takes brand-new Padawan Anakin on an excursion into the city for an afternoon. Lots of new things to see and experience for a boy from Tatooine, and Coruscant is big and bustling and amazing and pretty tiring after just a few hours. Obi-Wan starts to believe maybe he can have a relationship with this strange boy from the desert.

Criminal Minds:

Nobody needs to know by [livejournal.com profile] faithburke Garcia writes fanfiction. She'll never tell.

Crossovers:

SPN/Psych Sam & Shawn, post-case unshenanigans, PG by [livejournal.com profile] lassiterfics ...So psychics are real, huh?

SPN/Glee Ghosts by [livejournal.com profile] limegreenjillo Mercedes and Kurt prove that they are quite a bit fiercer than a ghost. Sam and Dean...don't have that much to do, actually.

SPN/Doctor Who: Allons-y by [livejournal.com profile] bellatemple Dean and Donna both have spazzy companions who are ancient, knowledgeable, spiky-haired, and wear long trench coats. (They also both have self-esteem issues despite their complete awesomeness, poor woobies.) THEY SHOULD MEET SOMEHOW.

DEAN AND DONNA ART by [livejournal.com profile] davincis_girl for the same prompt! :D

Lost Cities )
maychorian: (not a good day)
I know I haven't posted forever, and I'm sorry. I'm still here, still writing, still alive. In the past couple of months I finally moved out of my parents' house and got my own place, so I've been very busy unpacking and organizing and all. Plus I don't have internet there. My work has also picked up, with both of my part-time jobs becoming progressively more stressful and energy-consuming. I'm busy, but mostly happy. And I'm still working on Familiar Strangers, and here's some proof!

The shiny white and black whorls of hyperspace elongated, stretched thin to the point that it seemed that the fabric of reality must tear at any moment, then snapped into the pinpoint stars and ethereal radiation of normal space-time. They were . . . they were . . . hmm. They were somewhere.

“Where are we, Carter?” Jack asked, glancing at his team.

Carter blinked, still gazing fixedly out the front windshield or porthole or whatever. “We’re . . . we’re . . .”

“We’re approaching a planet,” Daniel said.

The major nodded. “Yeah, that.”

As usual, Teal’c just stood there, disregarding the silly, uncultured Tau’ri. No doubt he had approached hundreds of planets from space. The cockpit was just a tad crowded with the six of them jammed in here (Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were still in the ship’s lounge, the Padawan asleep, the Master not), but the team from the Milky Way wouldn’t have missed this for anything.

“This is Coruscant,” Nik’lai Hayde said, grinning affably up at them from his seat. Beside him, Lindle bounced irrepressibly in his own chair, occasionally stretching over the console (obviously not built for the use of a ten-year-old) to punch a button or adjust a lever. Each time Jack hoped that he wasn’t going to kill them all.

“It’s . . . pretty.”

It was all Jack could offer. On the dayside the planet glowed metallic in the sunlight, and on the nightside a billion lights twinkled and burned in golden rivers. Not really an Emerald City. More like a Ruby and Jet and Tiger’s Eye City. Oh, and a white-gray one, with all that metal, turned molten by sunshine. Moonstone City? Probably. All of ‘em together.

“Some say that the name ‘Coruscant’ comes from the Corusca gem,” Nik’lai said, “referring, I suppose, to the way light shines both on the gem and on the planet, and flares across it as across the multi-faceted planes of a well-cut jewel. But millennia ago the planet must have had a different name, for how could a pre-space culture have known that the entire planet glittered like a jewel? The older name has been lost, of course, perhaps before the Republic was founded, years and years and years ago, beyond the reach of even our most ancient histories.”

Daniel nodded thoughtfully, blue eyes gleaming deep with scholarly joy. The kid was right at home, here. “And in future millennia, perhaps it will have another name yet.”

But Nik’lai frowned at this. “I hope not. For that would mean that the entire galaxy has been re-ordered, and the Republic lost irretrievably. I cannot see how that could be a good thing.”

“All civilizations fall,” Daniel murmured, so lowly that the Jedi Master might have missed it. Or at least could pretend that he had.

Eh, that's all you get for now. Stay tuned!

Gah. I will finish this story, I swear. I think we might be about half-way through now. And if you're not reading this because you avoid WIPs, I don't blame you. I'm a bad person.

But here it is, a nice boring, slow-paced chapter to contrast with the fast-paced, interesting ones that came before. (Why doesn't html have a < sarcasm > tag?)

Excerpt:
--
They were in space. They were in space in another galaxy. They were in hyperspace in space in another galaxy. And they were playing a card game with a little boy who had a tail. Sam kept repeating these things to herself, just to make sure she wouldn’t forget that she wasn’t asleep and dreaming about the most incredible tech-toys ever.

Even as she stared, the card-chips in her hand flickered and changed, randomized by the small device in the middle of the playing area. Beside her, the colonel made a disgusted sound. Apparently his winning hand had now become a losing one. Or something. Teal’c, of course, had the perfect poker face. Or sabbacc face. And Lindle always looked gleeful, so how was she to know?

Well, I made this one hard on myself with all the italics to encode and stuff. But oh well.

Part 5 is written and will be posted tomorrow, probably.

Excerpt:
--
“Daniel!” I’m not going to win this one, am I?

“Jack!” You bet your sweet cornbread you’re not going to win this one, you sorry, sorry military idiot.

Daniel could be really vicious in these body language and voice tone wars.

Jack slipped easily into this persona he created for himself. He knew that Daniel was doing the same—only Daniel would believe it, making it real, making himself release everything and be open to new people, new experiences. Daniel was like that.

No, more than “like that”—that was who Daniel was. Always open, trusting, wanting to discover, to learn. Believing all good of the universe until it had been proved to him conclusively that the good wasn’t there, and then still thinking he could find it somewhere.

Well, I'm almost done with Part 5. So I should catch up with the posting here, huh?

I wonder if anyone is reading this.

Excerpt:
--
How many kids did he have to watch die? Too many teenage soldiers, too many faces still round with childhood, eyes still bright with invincibility, too many. One son, too many. Punishment for his sins. To watch. Damn the universe for choosing this one, too. He’d known the boy for five hours, now. It wasn’t enough. It was too much.

Well, I guess I'll go ahead and post this story here. It isn't finished, but it's on its way, and it's already closer to 20k words than not. So good, I guess.

Excerpt:
--
Daniel made a shift as if to get up, and Jack reached over Carter and grabbed his jacket. “Oh, no you don’t. No way you’re waltzing up to the front door of that place and starting your ‘peaceful explorers’ bit until we know more about them and the situation. For all we know, these could be the kind who shoot first and never ask questions at all.”

Daniel blinked his baby blues, completely nonplussed. “Actually, I was thinking that you should do it.”

“What, waltz up to the front door?”

“Yes, Jack,” the younger man said with infinite patience. “They’re military. You’re military. Solidarity of the species. I’m sure you’ll get along.”

Summary: SG-1 gets to go to another galaxy. Yay! Or maybe not so yay, since there are bad guys there, too. And good ones. Yay! Yeah, it’s gonna be another one of those days.
Timeframe: Pre-TPM, late 4th or early 5th season in SG.
Spoilers: Lots of little ones.
Feedback: Yes, please! Criticism is welcome. Unless it’s along the lines of “Star Wars is stupid.” Tell me about typos, please. I know I have them, but not where.
Note: The Star Wars movies don’t exist in this Stargate universe. Slightly non-canonical then, sorry. Also, this title kind of sucks, so I might change it I think of something better. Ideas?
Disclaimer: If you recognize it, I don’t own it. Or him. Lovely hims.
