Supernatural 4.13
Jan. 31st, 2009 09:04 amI really shouldn't be taking time for this, since I need to be back at the convention center in an hour (I was there from eight to eleven forty-five at night yesterday, and oh, ITWASSOEPIC), but I just have to post.
Reactions in no particular order:
First of all, SAAAAAAAAAAAMMMM!!!!!! Sammy in scrubs! Sammy being comforting and kind to a hurting teenage girl! Sam sticking up for the nerd! Sam BEING a nerd and writing excellent essays! Young Sam fighting like a maniac! Adult Sam so sad and angsty and awwww! SAM SAM SAM SAM SAM SAM!
This might very well be my favorite Sam episode ever. Perhaps it was because of how human it was, nothing about the demon blood and psychic powers and dark destiny, though all that stuff is cool. Just one kid trying to muddle through the awful experience that is high school, and figuring out much much later that he made some mistakes. Awwwwww, Saaaaaam.
I loved how teen Dean made sure that Sam had his books and supplies and butterfly knife, but didn't take anything for himself. Well, I didn't LOVE it, I guess, because it's sad, but I really liked the character insight there. Dean looks out for his brother, but he had clearly given up on school, believed that it had nothing to offer him. Perhaps, deep down, he too always wanted something more for Sam, even though he convinced himself that he was a hero and the family business was awesome (true, btw, but, always so much they're missing out on, too). Which, well, wibble to the max, teen Dean, wibble to the max.
"The whistle makes me their God." I am SO GLAD I wasn't spoiled for that. I laughed like a loon.
Mr. White! How are you so awesome? What a great teacher.
Stoic!wee!Sam! Protective!teen!Dean! Best scene EVER. Yes, any high school girl seeing her sorta-boyfriend being like that with his little brother would melt all over. Big brother Dean! You could see that young Sam found that comforting and reassuring, too, even though he didn't want Dean to carry through on his threats.
And poor wee!Sam not wanting to be a freak. :(
DEAN ASKING IF SAM IS ALL RIGHT! PRACTICALLY OFFERING TO TALK ABOUT FEELINGS! Oh, Dean, you are such a good brother. Never want to talk about yourself, but your brother? Yeah. Oh, Dean.
Oh, and Dirk watching his mom die slow, changing him? I thought about that year when Sam knew Dean was going to hell at the end of it, and all the changes he made in himself. Just, ack, stab to the heart, man. Stab to the heart.
BTW, absolutely adored the return of empathetic Sam. When he said "I believe you" and "I'm sorry" and everything like that, he so clearly felt it way down in his gut and all through him and just, oh. Oh.
And Dean! Dean. Oh, young Dean. When things get too close and personal, when you start to get scared ("I don't do parents!"), you do everything you can to sabotage it, don't you? And it worked. But you didn't realize just how well Amanda had gotten to know you. Perhaps that's what scared you most of all, that someone who was not your father or brother could know you so very well. No, actually, you don't want your father or brother to know that about you either, to know that you get scared and lonely, do you? Always the front, Dean, you poor child.
I liked how he wasn't wearing the leather jacket in that scene. It was like his facade of coolness had been stripped away, just for a moment. And oh, his face was so naked and vulnerable. I was skeptical about the casting choice at first, but wow, he really, really brought it.
I WANT TO HUG THEM BOTH A LOT. I always do, but this more than usual.
I also liked the mild parallel, how Dean was also being slut-shamed, sort of, like the girl in the opener. I don't know, it just made me think. Also how the worst thing anyone can give you is pity.
And the "after school special"ness of it all? About how bullying is bad and even bullies deserve understanding and empathy? Yeah, I can get behind that. And it wasn't clubbed into the viewers' heads, either. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
I vaguely think that I may have had other thinky thoughts, too, but I must go now, for real.
