maychorian: (way with words)

Well, I said that I would blog on Tuesday about D&D, but I was very busy yesterday. (TWO huge proofreading projects ftl!) And I also realized that for the story to make sense, and to be as interesting and as funny as it is to me, I'll have to start at the beginning. So I will, but expect me to make mistakes. as I didn't take notes and things are somewhat jumbled in my mind.

Right now I'm working on typing up Viara's backstory for Jill (Pineheart), since she's going to make our adventures into a novel for NaNoWriMo. So yeah, Jill, when I get things wrong write a note, yeah? Thanks. Writing is always good for me--it makes me think about things I hadn't before. I should have done this long ago. I'm very detail-oriented, so I keep adding interesting little stuff, and it will probably affect my roleplaying from now on. Which can only be a good thing. I'm not very good at roleplaying, yet. Maybe I'll post the bio here when I finish it.

Also, I watched the first disc of Sliders, recently, (remember that show?). I quite enjoyed it, but I really laughed when the guy was in the car and the radio announcer was going on and on about "global cooling" and how scientists were thinking that the end of the Earth was coming in a cloud of ice and all. Funny how things change, huh? This was only, like, twelve years ago. I don't really trust this current thing. It seems like a fad, how it came out of almost nowhere and suddenly everyone is jumping on board. I'm not saying that I think the scientists are liars, exactly, but I've heard it both ways and I'm inclined to "wait and see," instead of getting all worried.

But then, I've never been one to get all that worried about the future. Which is sometimes a bad thing, since I'm not very good at planning ahead, but usually is okay, because I have enough to deal with today, you know? And next month. Next year will take care of itself.

One of the big proofreading projects was this massive, 100-page "Green Living Guide," which was full of articles about being environmentally conscious and stuff. I appreciated reading a lot of it, as it was common sense, and good advice, such as buying used instead of new, and shopping with a reusable bag instead of taking home a whole lot of plastic ones, and getting a filtration system at home instead of buying bottled water, which is wasteful and usually has more bacteria than tap water, anyway. A lot of that stuff, I'd like to do myself. (Especially the bags. That is good advice, and something I can do easily, right now.)

But some of it was just silly and over-the-top. And at one point in the copy the writer talked about a "virtuous cycle" of economics caused by buying locally, and I just. "Virtuous"?!?! Geesh. "Green" is such a religion now. A religion, a passion, a cause. Almost a cult. Some of these people are a little creepy. We're supposed to be stewards of the earth, yeah, and I'm all for that. I think we've been doing a crappy job so far and we need to do better. But c'mon. Everything in moderation, folks.

But okay. It's soup day! A marvelous invention and I'm glad the folks at my office are doing it, and now I'm going to go get some soup.
