maychorian: (sleepy mice)
[personal profile] maychorian
I've been making a bunch of friends lately, and it occurs to me that I ought to do some sort of introductory post thing and explain some things about myself so you know what you're getting into, you crazy people you.

1. My username: Maychoria was the name of the fantasy country I made up when I was thirteen, from the Greek words for "happy" and "land." I wrote a novel set in it, a rather ridiculous rip-off of Lewis and Tolkien and a bunch of other stuff, and I had plans for more novels, short stories, the works. About then was when I started spending a lot of time online, and this particular sequence of letters was never taken, anywhere, since I had made it up. So yeah. Maychorian = inhabitant of the happy land. Not entirely inappropriate. I went by "Laura of Maychoria" over at fanfiction.net, for no apparent reason, but mostly I'm maychorian everywhere.

2. My personality: I am mostly shy, calm, and cheerful, more given to listening than talking. I cannot stand conflict in any form, though lately I've been trying to learn to stand up for myself more often, express myself even when it makes me nervous. Mainly, though, I like to get along with people. I'm good at being tactful and diplomatic, when I want to be, which is useful for when I'm playing a bard or something in D&D.

3. My RL alter ego: I am twenty-five, a graduate of a small Christian college with a degree in Professional Writing, which I do not use for much, really. I work at a marketing and design company as a proofreader and occasional copywriter. I'm very, very good at proofreading and editing, mostly because I am extremely detail-oriented and picky. (This doesn't mean that I don't make typos online or in my fics, though, so if you notice please tell me.) I live in an apartment, alone but for my pets: one cat, two rats, and nine mice (at the moment; populations change). I have a family only fifteen minutes away though, mom and dad and seven younger siblings, five of which still live at home, and I also meet with friends twice a week to play D&D and other games and basically indulge in a lot of tomfoolery. I sometimes post here about my family and friends, though not that often.

4. My faith: I am a Christian. I believe in God and Jesus and the Bible, pretty much literally. But I am not an asshat about this, so don't be afraid. I believe what I believe and I probably always will, but I'm not here to proselytize the internet. I'm perfectly willing to have civil discussions, though. Just don't expect any kind of intellectual debate. I am sort of unreasonable about this.

5. My politics: Will probably never be discussed here, because again, not an asshat, not interested in debate, and very much loathing conflict of any kind. But yeah, I'm pretty much a libertarian, meaning that I think people should be allowed to get on with their lives without a lot of government control. Political power is, in my opinion, inherently corrupt, and should be limited as much as possible. Again, I don't really see any need to talk about it. A lot of libertarians are also asshats, and I do not wish to be associated with them. Penn and Teller are cool, though. (For the record, I don't like any of the major candidates up this year.)

6. My other interests: Besides reading and writing, I also play piano and a little guitar, and waste a lot of time trying to increase my skills at Guitar Hero and Dr. Mario. I have a broad range of tastes when it comes to music, but I dislike practically everything on the radio right now. Cuz yeah, I like folk music and oldies and heavy metal and classic rock and swing and Celtic and bluegrass and zydeco. I like tambourines and accordions and acoustic guitars and bodhrans and Iron Age brass horns that sound like digeridoos and rockin' drums and electric guitars and every well-laid bass line that exists. And that's about it.

I might add other stuff here if I think of it.

Any questions? My life is an open book. ::licks finger, poised to turn the pages::

ETA: A few other posts with pertinent facts.

Creative Exclamations--an explanation for why gibberish phrases occasionally appear in my posts, or "Laura-isms," as my RL friends call them. Not entirely accurate anymore; Dean is a bad influence on me.

A Fairly Brief Writerly History--what it says on the tin.

I Like Gen Cuddles and I Cannot Lie--self-indulgent ruminations on my own fanfic writing and love of h/c.

One of my rambling personal thingies and Follow-up on that personal thingie--f-locked for a reason, but I don't mind sharing with you, LJ peeps. This stuff is part of me, too.

And hey, here's a not entirely horrible pic of me from March of last year! Yay! YOUR ILLUSIONS, LET ME SHATTER THEM!
