So yes, I made another batch today, and I took pictures. And I added bacon to this batch, substituting bacon grease for the melted butter and tossing the bits in with the dry ingredients, and they baked up beautifully and they were really, really yummy. Bacon-peanut butter-bran might sound weird, but don't try it till you knock it, that's what I say. Or, wait, reverse that. Yes. Try it.
(This last weekend was the town fair in my little village, and I tried the chocolate-covered bacon at a stand, and it was not tasty. Just weird. But this... Yes. Delicious.)
If you're wondering, it was sixteen ounces of bacon. I cut it up with a shears before frying it, and I fried it up nice and crispy because that's how I like my bacon. It made more than enough grease for the recipe. The extra my family saves for green beans and such.

Ingredients! I forgot to get out the baking powder, though. Imagine it's hiding behind the flour canister.

Bran plus buttermilk. It looks like sawdust and smells like cereal.

Dry ingredients.

Wet ingredients. As mentioned, I used half a cup of bacon grease instead of melted butter for this batch. Unfortunately I did not let it cool quite enough, so I got some little bits of cooked egg in there. Not enough to notice in the final muffin, but I will definitely be more careful next time. And there will be a next time. Oh yes.

Wet ingredients plus bran mixture.

All ingredients, mixed until moistened. Off-screen I tossed the bacon bits into the dry ingredients before dumping it all in.

In the pan. You will notice I am a bit messy and there are bits of batter outside the cups. I scraped most of it back in before baking. Because of the addition of bacon bits, there was enough material to fill all 12 cups, instead of 11 like the usual recipe.

And handsome muffins they are, too!

Here's one I baked yesterday, sans bacon, situated picturesquely in a sunbeam.
Hope you enjoyed!
