maychorian: (Papa John)

For [livejournal.com profile] kalquessa, and also anyone else who cares, here are some good John Winchester fics which helped me form how I see the character.

Well, there’s another rec list I made, which was focused on Weechesters: yeah, this one. Those still apply.

Also, pretty much anything by [livejournal.com profile] dodger_winslow, though I don’t always agree with her interpretation. She fangirls John really hard, which is cool, but, you know, not quite how I do it. I like him, maybe even love him, but I would never say that I’m a Johngirl at all. But especially check out Freaks and Monsters, which is also great for other reasons. In fact, I don’t think I ever commented on that one, because reading it made me almost too thinky and hurt to deal, and part of me is still pondering it. My bad. (May contain triggers…that’s probably why it hit me so hard. I almost wished that I had a John Winchester in my life when I finished reading that.)

So, others.

Everybody’s Sin by [livejournal.com profile] july_july_july. Not the only fic I’ve read from John’s POV while he’s possessed during Devil’s Trap, but my favorite. This is the one that gave me my final epiphany which made me finally able to write the story my muse was demanding I write. (“Cold and Lonely Watch,” if you’re curious.) But I read a lot of other stuff before that, too.

Tiger Boy by [livejournal.com profile] pdragon76. Here’s the quote at the beginning of the story: “Tiger father begets tiger son. ~Chinese Proverb.” Yeah. That’s John and Dean, all right. Incredibly well-written, to boot.

Trost und Freude by [livejournal.com profile] gwendolyngrace. This is 75,000 words, so… yeah. I hate to say it, but this is one of those stories where I think John is almost a little TOO soft. He’s an absolutely fantastic father in this story, and while that’s certainly what I would hope for, I’m not sure I totally believe it. Not enough flaws. :( Still totally worth reading, though. Another one I forgot to comment on, whoops.

We Say Grace, We Say Ma’am by [livejournal.com profile] kimonkey7. Short, but packs a powerful punch. Seriously, just read it.

The Absent-minded Winchester by [livejournal.com profile] i_speak_tongue. This seems like such a simple little story, and yet somehow it says so much about John and Dean and their time without Sam.

Standard Procedure by [livejournal.com profile] minkmix. Another seemingly simple little moment in Winchester time that paints a very compelling portrait of John and his children.

Silence Cast to Night Skies by [livejournal.com profile] tahirire. One of the first fics I read that challenged how I saw John—before this one I was pretty down on him as a character. Also, the video linked in her notes gets me seriously teary-eyed, and that’s freakin’ rare.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, by the way. I’ve forgotten way more than I remember.
