Mmm, time

I have decided that it is time to start migrating from xanga to LJ. Because LJ has more people I want to get to know better, in fandom and all, and perhaps I'll be more motivated to write, since I promised I would post writing here.

So, from now on, x-posting. (Yay!)

Follows most recent xangapost. I hope this works. I'll probably keep writing in xanga, because their entry system is a little simpler, and then transfer here. If, as mentioned, it works.

This post is also very geeky and fannish, with equal amounts squee and glowering, so it belongs here.

On Heroes

The TV show, not heroes in general. Tim recently wrote about his thoughts on the current season over in his blog, and this is partially in response to that. Obviously there will be a bunch of spoilers here, so don't read on if you're not watching the show, and want to watch it someday without being spoiled.

Claire and Stalker Boy: I've been very hostile to the romance that the writers are trying to set up between these two characters, because so far West has been mean and a jerk and a flying, peeping stalker. But it occurred to me halfway through the last episode, right about when Claire finally told him that yes, she was special and a freak and he smiled at her for the very first time, that there's probably a reason behind his jerkishness. I think he's very, very lonely, and not so much by choice. He's been searching for someone else he could confide in about the weird things that have been happening to him, and when he finally found her, she denied everything. And so he pushed and pushed and pushed until she HAD to tell him off.

I expected to be irritated, but the beach scene actually felt quite natural to me. When she questioned the mark on his neck, he hesitated, but not for long. He's just been aching for someone to talk to, and I finally felt some connection to his character for the first time.

I do think that the kiss came way too soon, though. I want him to apologize for being a jerk, and to explain on screen his motivations for being a jerk, if they do indeed match my assumptions. I think that would go a long way toward redeeming him both to Claire and to the audience. Judging by fan reaction on the internet, a lot of people are irritated by this development, and I wish the writers had done a better job of justifying it. In my head, he already apologized and explained himself, earlier in that beach conversation.

Maybe I'll just write a fanfic to that effect. Yeah. Fanfic makes everything better.

Candace and Sylar: I'm very, very pleased to see the creepy serial killer back again, as I knew he would be. Good choice to have him lose his powers. Frustrated Sylar is fun! I also was very happy to see Candace again, because I like her character and I thought she would be the only one who could control him, short of drugging him into unconsciousness and strapping him down in a cement room in the basement of a paper company, and even that didn't last, eh? Her offers to him were also very funny.

So I was disappointed when she let him KILL HER WITH A COFFEE MUG. Man, that was the stupidest thing ever. What, did she FORGET that he was a cold-blooded murderer who would drool for her brain as soon as he knew she had a power? When Eden died, at least she was TRYING to do what needed done.

It was so dumb that my mind won't accept that it happened. I'm really hoping that this whole thing was an illusion, and Candace is alive and well and laughing at him as he yells DO NOT WANT! at the sky.

I guess we'll see next week.

Peter stuck in the most cliched Ireland ever: Oh, Peter! Thank you for losing your shirt midway across the Atlantic. I very much appreciated that, as did most of the wimmins. But unless you have Stockholm Syndrome, you are being very, very dumb. I also am disappointed that they went the cliched route with the  woman being the only kind one. It would be cooler if she was a badass, too. She's not a character, she's a plot device, revolving around the men. Unoriginal, Show. No cookies for you.

Stockholm does make sense with Peter being an empath, and if you look at it that way him latching onto her also makes sense. I also understood him not opening the box. I think his amnesia is likely subconscious, as most of his problems last season were. I think he just doesn't WANT to be who he is, which is basically a big bundle of power. After exploding and almost killing everyone, it would make sense to me that he would try to reject that part of him, and still is now. He wanted to be a hospice nurse, for goodness sake. I think he still yearns toward that, toward helping people. So maybe his latching onto the first group of people he met is in character, even though they've been beating him up and withholding information from him. Bad Irish gangsters with horrible accents! No cookies for you, either. But anyway, they need to explain this sooner rather than later.

The whole "Lightning! Sparks!" scene would have been funny if I hadn't seen Spider-Man. Unoriginal, Show. You are at negative cookies.

On the plus side, yay Malcolm O'Reed!

DL/Niki/Micah: I actually wasn't surprised that DL was dead--it looked pretty much over for him, last season. But I was sad, because he's cool. I was surprised that Matt was still alive, actually, since he was also shot up pretty badly, but I guess quick medical help could have something to do with it. (Again, needs to be explained someday.) And boo to the show for knocking off one of the few interesting characters who wasn't white. Not very international, as you keep claiming this is supposed to be.

Niki is not very interesting. Bad writers. Make her more interesting.

Yay Nawlins Uhura! I hope she has powers too. But the reveal was weird and the camera lingered too long, in an obvious bit of stunt casting without a story reason to back it up. (Unlike the Kaito/Sulu reveal last season, which was awesome.)

Mostly, those scenes were just too short and sort of thrown in there. I love Micah to the very death of the universe, and I want more.

House of Mo: I really, really love that Matt, Mohinder and Molly are together. Both men have enormous protective feelings for Molly, and their whole dynamic just gives me warm, warm fuzzies. Didn't find it unsettling at all--why SHOULDN'T two people with that much in common decide to share an apartment (and the protection of the little girl who considers them both her heroes)? I'm big on friendship, and that's what I see there.

But Matt really needs to learn how to use his telepathy a little better. Obviously he's going through a rough time right now, what with losing his wife and moving to a new city and becoming a detective and suddenly having a new family. I really like his character, but I hope he can bring it together soon.

Conspiracy and the Company: Is awesome.

Maya and Angelo: Were interesting the FIRST time we watched them running. Now it's just repetitive. When they started running and jumping fences in the most recent episode, I seriously thought we had looped around to the first scene with them, and I started looking for Hiro. Yawn. Could have skipped that entire thing--could have skipped their scenes in the last two episodes, and just had them show up in the States where the interesting stuff can start. If I were writing this as a novel, that's what I would do.

Oh, and Hiro: I don't blame him for wanting to stick around in the past, but he's going to feel bad when he comes back to the future and finds out his dad has died. Really, really bad, knowing Hiro. And another  female character there purely to be a love interest! She was cool when she was carrying a sword and fighting samurai and slapping Kensei. Now she's just another thing that revolves around the menz. I liked this storyline up 'til now, and the whole "90 angry what?" was awesome, but please.

I hope we skip to the interesting parts, as I'm going to be very, very bored if this turns out to be a love triangle thing. It also would be dumb if Hiro has to MAKE the entire legend happen. Legends are not as cool if you see them happen. I'm okay with him setting it in motion, but I don't want them to take away all of Hiro's innocent joy by making him be his own hero.

I think this might actually be the least interesting storyline to me, and that is sad. Last season Hiro was the MOST interesting. I guess it's because I know that all this is in the past, so it's already been decided, in a way. I still like seeing Hiro on screen, but I don't sit up in my seat when he appears anymore.

And, aw, Ando! So lonely! He needs his Hiro soon.

Overall: We're having some of the same issues as last season, with the show trying to juggle dozens of characters and storylines at the same time. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. The last two episodes were mostly good, but this one was kind of clunky and not as enjoyable. It would be good if ALL of the characters and plots were equally interesting, but that's probably impossible. Once again we're in a holding pattern, waiting for it all to come together.

Still definitely my favorite show on television. I'm so, so glad it exists, when it seems like every other show is a cop show or doctor show, or cops AND doctors, or doctors who think they're cops. Then again, the networks seem to be trying out some different stuff this season, which I'm grateful for. "Chuck" (airs right before Heroes) is fun and fluffy, if you don't think about it too hard. I'm glad Bionic Woman exists, because female protagonist! Not enough of them! I hope it sticks, though it's been a little too melodramatic so far.

Still love Ugly Betty, My Name Is Earl, 30 Rock, The Office, Scrubs, and How I Met Your Mother, though I'm forced to be creative in finding ways to watch some of those which air at the same time. I'm starting to get into Friday Night Lights and Numb3rs, too. I have something good and/or interesting to watch every evening, which I appreciate.

And yeah, that's enough from me
